Columbus and Central Ohio Disability Claim Attorney Michael D. Colasurd
The Social Security Administration (SSA) oversees two programs that provide benefits for people who cannot work because of a verified medical condition:
- Social Security Disability (SSD) provides monthly compensation based on Social Security (FICA) payroll deductions you have paid into the system over the years, up to a maximum benefit. There is no income threshold to receive SSD.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a safety net for people who have never worked or do not have enough work credits to qualify for Social Security Disability. SSI pays a fixed monthly stipend to cover basic living. You must have little income and very limited assets to qualify.
The definition of disability is the same for both SSD and SSI: (A) You must be out of work for 12 months or anticipate that your disability will last a year or more, and (B) You must have a qualifying impairment that prevents you from sustaining gainful employment. Because it takes so long to qualify, you should start the application process early. (You do not have to wait 12 months before you apply.)
